It may seem that too many objectives are incompatible to transport freight while caring for the environment. After all, freight transportation produces traffic that is damaging to the environment, causing air pollution and noise. However, transportation of freight is vital in order to receive the products in the stores to be purchased. Resulting in the necessity to find ways to transport shipments efficiently and to be environmentally conscience simultaneously. Recent legislation in Europe is making significant changes to reduce freight transportation impact on the environment. For example making efforts to improve the way different types of transportation operate together. Combining the modes to reduce the environmental effects is the idea while maximizing efficiency in the economy. Another example is the introduction of a new policy by the United Kingdom. The policy was designed in order to reduce freight shipping impact on congestion and to the environment. The policy objectives were to decrease accidents, congestion and pollution by the industry in the UK. The government plan includes reducing negative impacts by emerging water freight and road hauling budgets. The combination of the two budgets allow for more funds to utilize water shipping more with less impact on cities and the environment, while still delivering goods in a timely manner. Currently freight programs are budgeted and operated separately despite the fact that all have objectives that are the same. Rail freight, roadway transportation and water shipping are all trying to reduce the environmental affects while remaining efficient and cost effective. By bringing the programs together in one funding deal so the focus can shift to the overall goal of prompting clean, safe freight transportation that doesn’t add to the congestion troubles. The new arrangements could provide more value for the money of the taxpayers and ensure the addition of funding to support freight industries to bring real benefits to the environment and economy. |
