About 20 years ago concerns for environmental and global warming were confined to scientists and those who called themselves “eco warriors”. Green topics are hence having an affect on the hauling industry. Recent reports published show making freight hauling more “green” friendly is precedence. With the change in climate more obvious, freight companies are realizing “go green” is soon to become more of a headline topic. “Green agendas” have been established as the main topic of awareness to be addressed by major haulers. Reports also suggest that currently the way freight is being transported are less than desirable from the “green” perspective. About 70% of freight transportation is by roadway. It is likely that roadway freight shipping is to continue, as the most preferred shipping method, suggested changes have been requested to be made. Committees want to try encouraging a shift to rail freight shipping from the traditional roadway freight. Also, when it isn’t possible for rail freight, suggestions to alleviate environmental impact by road transportation. An example would be reducing congestion by the addition of freight only lanes on all major interstates. Allowing one or two lanes to be dedicated just to freight haulers would allow for the other lanes to flow freely. Another option suggested was to encourage freight companies utilizing trucks on woodland roads to fuel their trucks with red diesel. Red diesel is the same type used in heating systems, certain types of equipment, refrigeration and agriculture. Freight companies, with a “go green” attitude, could change the way shipping is looked at in the future. Setting the standards today could change the environment for years to come. The freight industry could utilize the technology and the engineering of today to revolutionize and “green” the industry. |
