Truckers and freight drivers have touch choices sometimes. And while the thought of a hot breakfast might seem like the perfect reward for a job done well; a well-schemed backload from a local freight exchange can make for more pay when the job is completed. To explain; In traditional freight transportation a driver gets a load and picks up at A to deliver to B. the driver gets paid, the company gets their load, all are happy. Except the driver has the drive the drive back to A without pay to cover the miles. It is a waste of time, money and could reduce profit – whether the trucker is an employee of large freight company or owner operators of their own rig. Freight exchange comes in here. Think of freight exchanges as dating service for cargo. Freight shippers will post loads to be hauled and drivers will sign for the ones they want. The two involved parties will agree on a fee and soon the freight is delivered. Now, How does freight exchange help the driver make the journey back to A? Easy – if he knows before hand that he will be running back empty, he can stop for a “freight date” to take back to A – or any other town on the way. If this is a backload, the freight delivery will be in a manner that is timely, the trucker decreases his unpaid driving time and the receiver gets their shipment. Everyone wins – but as stated earlier, the freight driver delays a hot breakfast, but life is all about comprise. Freight exchanges have been part of the industry for years, but as the development of new technology in the hauling industry, things are becoming easier. Some freight exchange companies have an e-pay system for quick invoice transfers, cell phone networks for driver contact by the exchange while driving and freight alerts that sends information when new shipments are posted that would be suitable. The freight industry has evolved from the traditional point A to point B shipping. And as technology also improves, the shipping companies as well as trucks owner operator can only wait and see what is to come. |
